Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have finally returned to Earth. They launched on June 5, 2024, aboard a Boeing Starliner for what was supposed to be an eight-day mission. However, due to unexpected technical problems, their stay stretched into nine long months aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
A Long-Awaited Return to Earth
After months of uncertainty, the astronauts splashed down off Florida’s coast this morning in a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. Their journey home took 17 hours, and they were accompanied by NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Elon Musk Criticizes Biden for Delayed Rescue
Meanwhile, Musk did not hold back from criticizing the Biden administration for delaying the astronauts’ return. According to him, SpaceX could have brought them back months earlier, but the government rejected the offer.
He stated:
“We made that offer to the Biden administration. It was rejected for political reasons and that’s just a fact.”
Astronauts Express Gratitude to Elon Musk and Trump
Before returning to Earth, Williams and Wilmore expressed their appreciation. In a lighthearted video shared by Elon Musk, Sunita Williams joked:
“We are coming back before long, so don’t make those plans without me.”
Their ordeal began in June 2024, when they arrived at the ISS as test pilots for Boeing’s Starliner capsule. At first, they expected to return after just one week. However, ongoing technical failures kept pushing back their departure date.
Donald Trump Promises to Bring Them Home
At the same time, Donald Trump spoke out about their extended stay. He strongly criticized Biden’s handling of the situation and reassured the astronauts that he would ensure their safe return.
He declared, “We love you and we’re coming up to get you, and you shouldn’t have been up there so long. The most incompetent president in our history has allowed that to happen to you… I’ve authorized Elon Musk to go and get them and he’s prepared to do so.”
