Tesla Strengthens Ties with Tata Companies Amid India Expansion Talks
Tata Group companies are strengthening their role in Tesla’s supply chain, paving the way for future opportunities in India.

Several Tata Group companies have quietly become key suppliers for Tesla, the electric vehicle giant led by Elon Musk. Since Tesla holds nearly half of the global automotive market value, this partnership is significant. Notably, Tata AutoComp, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics play a crucial role in Tesla’s supply chain. Furthermore, if Tesla establishes manufacturing operations in India, these companies could see even greater opportunities.

Tata Group’s Role in Tesla’s Supply Chain

These Tata firms have already secured global supply agreements with Tesla. As a result, they contribute nearly $2 billion in Indian exports to Tesla in FY24. Additionally, Tesla has urged its current suppliers to consider setting up factories near its plants to strengthen the supply network.

A top industry insider told ET, "Tesla is, in a way, readying the supplier base in India. We are very sure that once Tesla starts manufacturing here, Indian suppliers will benefit from sourcing opportunities." Notably, Tesla’s senior procurement executives have already met with several suppliers.

During these discussions, the focus has been on the development and production of key components such as castings, forgings, electronics, and fabricated parts. At the same time, India has become an important development and supply hub for Tesla. Moreover, the company aims to reduce dependence on China and Taiwan by sourcing parts like wiring harnesses, electric motors, gearboxes, suspension systems, powertrains, and advanced electronics from India.

Within the Tata Group, different companies contribute in specialized ways:

  • Tata AutoComp manufactures specialized EV components.
  • Tata Technologies provides product lifecycle management services.
  • TCS supplies circuit-board technology.
  • Tata Electronics is preparing to manufacture chips once its plant becomes operational.

Tesla’s India Manufacturing Plans

Looking ahead, Tata’s role in Tesla’s supply chain will depend on Tesla’s final decision regarding local production. Since tax benefits and financial incentives are crucial, Tesla is carefully analyzing India’s policies before making a move. In addition, the company enforces strict confidentiality on supplier contracts, ensuring that sourcing details remain undisclosed.

Meanwhile, Tesla is expected to source critical components from Tata Electronics, including:

  • Printed circuit board assemblies for battery systems
  • Motor controller units
  • Door control mechanisms

Apart from the Tata Group, Tesla has also formed partnerships with several Indian suppliers, such as Samvardhana Motherson, Suprajit Engineering, Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Varroc Engineering, Bharat Forge, and Sandhar Technologies. As a result, the value of Tesla’s component procurement from India has already reached $1.7–1.9 billion in FY24. Moreover, experts predict this number will rise further in FY25.

Reducing Dependence on China

Since the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains, Tesla has actively worked to reduce its reliance on China. Consequently, the company has begun sourcing electronic, electrical, and mechanical components from alternative locations.

Even though Tesla produces essential electric components like motors, battery packs, and chargers in-house, it still relies on global suppliers for many subassemblies. Furthermore, the company remains highly secretive about its supplier network.

To further diversify its supply chain, Tesla has instructed its suppliers to shift production outside China and Taiwan. Importantly, this transition is expected to begin next year.

India as a Future Hub?

Currently, Tesla is engaged in discussions with several Indian states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Telangana. The company is exploring options to establish a manufacturing plant in India. If this plan moves forward, it will not only expand Tesla’s presence in the country but also create significant opportunities for local suppliers.
