PM Modi Gifts Indian Handicrafts to Thai Royalty and Leaders
During his Thailand visit, PM Modi gifted traditional Indian artworks to Thai leaders, celebrating cultural ties and strengthening bilateral relations.

During his visit to Thailand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave meaningful traditional gifts to the Thai royal family, Prime Minister, and other leaders. These gifts highlighted India’s rich heritage and craftsmanship.

Brass Buddha Statue for Thai King and Queen

To start, PM Modi presented a Brass Statue of Buddha in Dhyan Mudra to the King and Queen of Thailand. Made in Bihar, this statue reflects the elegant Sarnath art style shaped by Gupta and Pala influences. It shows Buddha in deep meditation, seated in Padmasana. A decorative Prabhavali (halo) behind him features detailed floral and celestial designs. The base includes a lotus design with the Dharmachakra, symbolizing purity and peace.

Crafted from brass, the statue represents strength and spiritual calm. It is ideal for temples, meditation spaces, or home altars.

Brocade Silk Shawl for the Queen of Thailand

Next, the Queen received a Brocade Silk Shawl from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This luxurious shawl is handwoven from pure silk and displays designs inspired by village life, festivals, and nature. The patterns draw influence from miniature paintings and Pichwai art.

The shawl has a bright mix of reds, blues, greens, and yellows, symbolizing joy and celebration. A wide border in pink, magenta, and gold adds a royal touch. It is both beautiful and comfortable, thanks to the careful work of skilled weavers.

Dokra Peacock Boat for Thai Prime Minister

Then, PM Modi gifted a Dokra Brass Peacock Boat to Thailand’s Prime Minister. Tribal artisans from Chhattisgarh handcrafted this item using the lost-wax casting method, an age-old technique.

The boat has a graceful peacock shape with colorful lacquer details. A small tribal figure rows the boat, showing harmony between people and nature—a key theme in Dokra art. The brass gains a rich patina over time, giving the piece an antique charm. It honors India’s tribal creativity and tradition.

Tiger Cufflinks for Thai PM’s Spouse

In addition, the Prime Minister’s spouse received gold-plated tiger cufflinks. These cufflinks feature a majestic tiger face, symbolizing strength and leadership. They include Meenakari enamel work from Rajasthan and Gujarat, adding vibrant color and detail.

Pearls border the tiger design, blending power with elegance. The cufflinks are made from silver with gold plating and have a bullet-back closure for easy use. They are elegant accessories that carry cultural meaning.

Brass Urli for Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra

Moreover, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra received a Brass Urli with Peacock and Diya from Andhra Pradesh. Traditionally, people use urlis in homes during rituals and festivals, often filling them with water, flowers, or candles.

This piece includes a central diya (oil lamp), which adds spiritual value. Its polished finish and intricate carvings reflect Andhra Pradesh’s metalwork tradition. It stands for purity, positivity, and abundance, making it suitable for both modern and traditional spaces.

India-Thailand Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Later, PM Modi met Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Bangkok to discuss stronger cooperation between the two countries. “A productive discussion meeting was held with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Bangkok just a short while ago. I would like to thank the Thai people and government for their warm welcome and also express solidarity with Thai people following the earthquake that occurred a few days ago,” PM Modi wrote on X.

He also highlighted how both nations’ policies support each other, “India’s ‘Act East Policy’ and Thailand’s ‘Act West Policy’ complement each other very well, opening up opportunities for bilateral cooperation in many areas,” PM Modi added.

Special Cultural Tribute by Thailand

To mark the occasion, the Thai government released a special stamp based on 18th-century Ramayan mural paintings. This cultural tribute shows the strong historical and spiritual bond between India and Thailand.
