Jay North, beloved child star of Dennis the Menace, has died at 73 after a battle with colon cancer.

Actor Jay North, known for his childhood role as Dennis Mitchell, passed away peacefully at his Florida home after battling colon cancer. Jay North, the beloved child actor from the sitcom Dennis the Menace, has died at age 73. His friend Laurie Jacobson, a writer and producer, announced the news on Facebook. She later confirmed to agencies that North’s family had informed her and her husband, actor Jon Provost.

Jacobson wrote, “As many of his fans know, he had a difficult journey in Hollywood and after…but he did not let it define his life.” She added, “He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply. He called us frequently and ended every conversation with ‘I love you with all my heart.’ And we loved him with all of ours.”

Cause of Death Revealed

Moreover, North’s co-star Jeannie Russell told The Hollywood Reporter that he died at his home in Lake Butler, Florida. She confirmed that he had been suffering from colon cancer.

Early Life in Hollywood

North was born in Hollywood in August 1951. At just 6 years old, he stepped into the world of television. His mother, Dorothy Cotton, worked as a secretary at the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. She helped him appear on his favorite local show, Cartoon Express.

Soon after, talent agent Hazel MacMillan noticed his potential. She quickly offered to represent him.

Rising Career in the 1950s

As a result, North began working as both a child model and actor. He landed small roles in several NBC shows such as The George Gobel Show, The Eddie Fisher Show, and The Milton Berle Show.

Then, in 1958, he got his big break. Screen Gems was looking for a young actor to play Dennis Mitchell in a new TV series based on Hank Ketcham’s comic strip Dennis the Menace.

Landing His Most Famous Role

Although North didn’t do well in his first audition, he didn’t give up. On his second try, he impressed the producers and won the lead role. The show premiered in 1959 and became a household favorite.

Before the show started filming, North also appeared in various series and movies. These included Wanted: Dead or Alive, 77 Sunset Strip, Rescue 8, The Miracle of the Hills, and The Big Operator.
