Ksenia Karelina Swapped for Russian Smuggling Suspect in Prison Deal
Ksenia Karelina, a U.S.-Russian ballet dancer, returns home after over a year in Russian prison following a high-stakes prisoner swap.

Ksenia Karelina, a 33-year-old ballet dancer and dual U.S.-Russian citizen, is finally free. Russian authorities released her as part of a high-stakes prisoner exchange. On Thursday, U.S. officials confirmed her release.

Russia Swaps Karelina for Smuggling Suspect

Russia exchanged Karelina for Artur Petrov, a German-Russian man. The U.S. had arrested him in Cyprus in August 2023. Officials accused Petrov of smuggling sensitive microelectronics to Russia. After his arrest, Cyprus extradited him to the United States.

Russian Court Sentenced Her to 12 Years

In August 2024, a Russian court sentenced Karelina to 12 years in a penal colony. Authorities accused her of treason. They said she donated about $51.80 to a U.S. charity that supported Ukraine. Additionally, they claimed she joined pro-Ukraine rallies and posted anti-war messages on social media.

However, her family and U.S. officials disagreed. They insisted she was wrongfully detained and never posed a threat to Russian security.

U.S. Confirms Her Release

Soon after the exchange, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared the news. He posted on X, "American Ksenia Karelina is on a plane back home to the United States. She was wrongfully detained by Russia for over a year and President Trump secured her release."

In a post shared on X by Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka, she also thanked President Donald Trump.

Karelina Built a Life in the U.S.

Karelina was born on December 13, 1991, in Yekaterinburg, Russia. She moved to the United States and became a citizen in 2021. She worked as a ballet dancer and spa aesthetician in Beverly Hills, California.

Fiancé Speaks Out with Relief

Her fiancé, professional boxer Chris van Heerden, had publicly expressed concern during her detention. After her release, he said, "I am overjoyed to hear that the love of my life, Ksenia Karelina is on her way home from wrongful detention in Russia."

FSB Arrested Her During a Family Visit

In January 2024, Karelina flew to Russia to visit her family. During that trip, agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested her. They claimed her small donation helped fund military equipment for Ukraine.

Yet, her lawyer, Mikhail Mushailov, strongly denied those charges. He said, "She did not assume that the funds she transferred would be used for anti-Russian actions."

Karelina Heads Home After Year of Uncertainty

Now, Karelina is finally on her way back to the United States. Her release ends more than a year of imprisonment and global attention. Still, her case has raised serious concerns about political detentions and freedom of expression in Russia.
