Digvesh Rathi has become one of the most talked-about players in IPL 2025. Not only has he impressed fans with his bowling for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), but he has also drawn attention for his unique celebration. His ‘notebook’ move, however, led to disciplinary action from the BCCI.
First Warning: Punjab Kings Match
To begin with, Rathi performed the 'notebook' celebration after dismissing Priyansh Arya in a match against Punjab Kings. He mimicked the well-known act of West Indies bowler Kesrick Williams. As a result, the BCCI fined him 25% of his match fee and gave him one demerit point.
Second Strike: Mumbai Indians Game
Despite the penalty, Rathi repeated the same celebration in the following match against Mumbai Indians. This time, he celebrated after getting Naman Dhir out. Consequently, the BCCI increased the fine to 50% of his match fee and gave him two more demerit points. This brought his total to three, putting him just one point away from suspension.
Smart Move: A Modified Celebration
Later, in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rathi changed his style. After dismissing Sunil Narine—his cricketing idol—he pretended to write on the grass instead of pulling out the usual 'notebook' move. Interestingly, the BCCI did not penalize him for this version.
Family’s Advice: Respect Comes First
Meanwhile, his brother Sunny asked him about the controversial act.
"I did ask Digvesh about it. He told me it motivates him. I said, 'Okay, if that helps you play better, fine, but don't disrespect any player'," Sunny told The Indian Express.
He added, "He's not doing it to attract attention. He was not even on social media till recently… wouldn't even update his WhatsApp status. He would say, 'what is the point of status update, when you don't have status'?"
Rising Star: Rathi’s IPL Performance
Moreover, Rathi has backed up his celebrations with strong on-field performances. LSG bought him for ₹30 lakhs after he impressed scouts in the first season of the Delhi Premier League.
So far, he has taken nine wickets in seven matches. Only Shardul Thakur, with eleven, has taken more for LSG. Additionally, his economy rate stands at an efficient 7.43.
Overall, Digvesh Rathi has become a breakout star in IPL 2025. While his celebrations have sparked controversy, his bowling continues to shine. If he stays focused and respectful, his future in cricket looks bright.
