Kaafir Returns as a Feature Film, Six Years After Digital Debut
Dia Mirza says portraying a wrongfully imprisoned woman in Kaafir deeply transformed her, both emotionally and personally.

Sonam Nair’s web series Kaafir, starring Dia Mirza, has received a fresh release. After premiering digitally six years ago, the project underwent a new round of editing and has now been presented as a feature film. The story of Kaafir continues to resonate deeply with audiences, especially through Dia’s powerful lead performance.

Dia Mirza Portrays a Wrongfully Accused Pakistani Woman

In Kaafir, Dia plays Kainaaz Akhtar, a Pakistani woman who accidentally crosses the Indian border. Authorities falsely accuse her of being a terrorist and imprison her. Her character faces intense struggles, including the birth of her daughter behind bars. Audiences and critics widely praised Dia’s performance for its emotional depth and realism.

Filming a Difficult Scene Took a Toll on Dia

In a conversation with CNN-News18 Showsha, Dia Mirza opened up about one particular scene that deeply affected her. She spoke about how difficult it was to film the rape scene in the show.

“I remember when we shot the rape scene; it was so hard. I was shaking physically after we got done with filming that scene. I remember throwing up. I vomited after we finished rolling that entire sequence. That’s how emotionally and physically demanding those situations were. When you take your entire body into the truth of that moment, you feel it. You feel it in its full extent,” Dia recalled.

Playing Kainaaz Changed Dia on a Personal Level

Dia revealed that portraying Kainaaz brought about emotional growth in her own life. She spoke about how she developed deep empathy for the character and how that helped her truly connect with the story.

“I think the first and most important thing one needs to feel as an artist is empathy towards the character that you’re playing and embodying. So that when you play, you’re absolutely true to the story and to everything within it. Playing Kainaaz actually made me a mother much before I became a biological mother. It was because of the kind of intensity and ferocity and love and protectiveness I felt for her while working on the show,” she said.

The Story Focuses on Injustice and Humanity

According to IMDb, Kaafir tells the story of Kainaaz Akhtar, who is wrongly labeled a militant and imprisoned in India. While in jail, she gives birth to a daughter. Vedant, a journalist, discovers their story and decides to help. Driven by a strong belief in justice, he takes on the task of revealing the truth.
