Mumbai Indians (MI) edged out Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs in the Eliminator, the 72nd match of the IPL 2025 season. The game took place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Punjab.
Mumbai Indians posted 228/5 in 20 overs, powered by a blazing half-century from Rohit Sharma and valuable contributions from Jonny Bairstow, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya.
While chasing, Trent Boult gave Gujarat Titans an early blow. Although Sai Sudharsan fought hard along with Washington Sundar, they failed to reach the target, and Gujarat Titans lost the match.
With this victory, Mumbai Indians advanced to Qualifier 2 on June 1, where they will face Punjab Kings. The winner of Qualifier 2 will play against RCB in the final on June 3.
Blazing Start by Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bat. Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow opened the innings. Mohammed Siraj bowled the first over and gave away just 6 runs. In the next over, Bairstow struck a boundary off Prasidh Krishna, but Rohit got a life when Gerald Coetzee dropped him. After three overs, MI reached 28/0.
Bairstow shifted gears in the fourth over. He smashed Prasidh Krishna for a six, a four, two sixes, and a boundary to bring up the 50-run stand. That over alone yielded 26 runs. In the next two overs, Rohit and Bairstow continued attacking. MI stood strong at 79/0 after six overs. Bairstow was on 44 off 17 balls, while Rohit had 33 from 19 deliveries.
Rashid and Kishore Pull Things Back
Rashid Khan bowled a tight seventh over, conceding just 3 runs. However, Sai Kishore provided the breakthrough in the eighth over. He dismissed Bairstow for 47 off 22 balls. Suryakumar Yadav joined Rohit and started with a boundary. MI reached 89/1 after 8 overs.
Rohit Reaches Fifty, MI in Control
Rohit continued the momentum. He hit Rashid for a boundary and a six, taking MI past 100 in the ninth over. He brought up his fifty in the 10th over with a boundary. After 10 overs, MI were comfortably placed at 113/1. Rohit was batting on 56.
In the 11th over, SKY hit a boundary. Then, he smacked back-to-back sixes in the 12th over. Mendis dropped him too, allowing MI to add 14 more runs. However, Sai Kishore removed SKY for 33 in the 13th over. MI were now 143/2.
Rohit Anchors, Pandya Provides Late Fireworks
Tilak Varma joined Rohit and kept the scoreboard ticking. Rohit hit a six off Rashid in the 15th over as MI reached 160/2. In the 16th and 17th overs, Rohit and Tilak smashed a six each. Prasidh Krishna then removed Rohit for 81 in the 17th. MI stood at 188/3.
Siraj returned in the 18th over and dismissed Tilak for 25. Naman Dhir added a boundary before falling to Krishna in the 19th over. MI were at 206/5 with one over left.
In the final over, Hardik Pandya struck three sixes off Coetzee and remained unbeaten on 22 off 9 balls. MI finished with a strong total of 228/5.
GT Lose Early Wicket
Chasing 229, Gujarat Titans started poorly. Trent Boult dismissed Shubman Gill for 1 in the first over. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a tight second over, giving away just 4 runs. In the third over, Sudharsan and Mendis counter-attacked. GT reached 30/1.
Sudharsan Fires, GT Keep Hopes Alive
Sudharsan looked in good touch. He hit boundaries off Gleeson and Pandya. The pair added a 50-run stand quickly. GT moved to 66/1 after 6 overs. Sudharsan had already scored 43 from 25 balls.
Santner broke the partnership in the seventh over by removing Mendis for 20. Washington Sundar joined Sudharsan, who soon reached his fifty off 28 balls. GT stood at 76/2.
In the next three overs, both batters scored briskly. Sudharsan and Sundar took GT past 100. After 10 overs, GT were at 106/2.
GT Stay in the Hunt
Pandya bowled the 11th over. Sundar hit a four and a six, completing a 50-run stand with Sudharsan. In the 13th over, Sundar smashed back-to-back sixes off Boult and a four. GT surged to 148/2.
However, Bumrah struck in the 14th over, removing Sundar for 48. Rutherford joined Sudharsan as GT stood at 152/3.
Gleeson Strikes, Sudharsan Departs
Ashwani Kumar bowled a steady 15th over. In the 16th over, Gleeson got Sudharsan out for a well-made 80 off 49. Rutherford added a few quick runs. GT were at 175/4.
GT added 9 runs in the 17th over and 18 more in the next over. At 193/4, they needed 36 from 12 balls.
MI Hold Nerve in Final Overs
Boult removed Rutherford on the first ball of the 19th over. Shahrukh Khan hit a six off the last ball, taking GT to 205/5. With 24 runs needed in the final over, Gleeson bowled the first three balls before walking off injured. Ashwani Kumar completed the over and dismissed Shahrukh on the 4th ball. GT finished at 208/6.
