US President Donald Trump has decided to double the tariff on steel imports. He announced that the current 25% tariff will increase to 50%. This announcement came just days after the US secured a deal with Japan’s Nippon Steel.
While speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump defended the move. He said the higher tariff would strengthen domestic steel production and reduce dependency on China. “We’re going to bring it from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry,” he said.
He emphasized that no one would be able to bypass the new rules. “Nobody’s going to get around that,” he added, addressing a crowd of blue-collar workers in the state that helped him win the election last year.
New Tariffs Take Effect Soon
The White House confirmed that the new tariff rate will take effect next week. Meanwhile, Trump assured workers of job security and additional benefits. “There will be no layoffs and no outsourcing whatsoever, and every US steel worker will soon receive a well deserved $5,000 bonus,” he told the crowd.
Deal with Nippon Steel Strengthens US Industry
Trump also spoke about the recent deal between Nippon Steel and US Steel. He stressed that US Steel will stay in America. “US Steel will continue to be controlled by the USA,” he said. Although he did not share full details of the deal, he made one thing clear, “US Steel… will remain in America with its headquarters in Pittsburgh.”
According to Trump, Nippon will invest $2.2 billion to expand steel production at the Mon Valley Works-Irvin plant, where he gave his speech. Additionally, the company will invest $7 billion to modernize steel mills, boost ore mining, and build new plants in Indiana and Minnesota.
Legal Relief for Tariff Measures
The decision to raise tariffs comes after a legal victory for Trump’s administration. Earlier, the Court of International Trade had declared the steel tariffs illegal. However, a US appeals court granted temporary relief. As a result, Trump’s team can continue collecting tariffs on foreign steel. This move is part of his broader effort to reshape US trade relations.
