Torrential Rain Wreaks Havoc Across Northeast India, Over 22 Dead
Heavy monsoon rains have caused deadly floods and landslides across Northeast India, killing over 22 people and displacing thousands.

Over the past three days, intense rainfall has caused deadly floods, landslides, and flash floods in several northeastern states of India. More than 22 people have lost their lives, while thousands are facing severe hardship. The worst-affected states include Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. Roads have been destroyed, homes flattened, and many families displaced.

In Guwahati, Assam, women were seen commuting through flooded streets using cycle rickshaws on May 31, 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings, forecasting more heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days.

State-Wise Impact

Continuous downpours have submerged 17 districts in Assam. Eight people have died, five of them in Kamrup Metro due to landslides. Rainwater from neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya has worsened the flooding.

Lakhimpur is the hardest-hit area, with more than 41,600 people impacted. Guwahati has remained waterlogged for two consecutive days. Rescue teams are evacuating people from submerged neighborhoods. Three districts are on red alert and eight on orange alert. Relief camps have been set up, and multiple agencies are working together to assist those in need.

Mizoram: Landslides Kill 5, Including 3 Refugees

Heavy rains triggered several landslides in Mizoram, killing four people—three of them Myanmarese refugees. One person was injured, and the death toll in the state has risen to five.

So far, 147 landslides and rockfalls have damaged 56 houses. Blockages at 69 points have cut off national and state highways. Authorities have moved 63 families to safer areas. Meanwhile, travellers remain stranded in Serchhip due to a blocked highway leading to southern Mizoram.

Meghalaya: 3 Dead, Over 1,100 Affected

Meghalaya has reported six deaths over the last three days. On Saturday, lightning killed two girls and one person drowned due to the heavy rains. Landslides and flash floods have affected around 1,100 residents in 49 villages. Power disruptions have made conditions worse.

Authorities are monitoring the situation. Extremely heavy rain is expected in East and South West Khasi Hills. The government may request paramilitary support to find a couple from Madhya Pradesh who went missing during the storm. Search efforts have been delayed by poor visibility and rain since Friday.

Arunachal Pradesh: CM Confirms 9 Deaths, Warns of More Rain

Nine people have died in Arunachal Pradesh due to landslides—seven in East Kameng and two in Ziro Valley. Chief Minister Pema Khandu offered condolences and announced ₹4 lakh in ex-gratia for each victim’s family. He urged people to avoid travel at night and stay away from overflowing rivers and streams. The IMD has predicted continuous heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning from June 1 to 6.

Manipur: Imphal Hit by Urban Flooding

In Manipur, non-stop rainfall caused flood-like conditions in Imphal. On Saturday, knee-deep water flooded streets and caused severe traffic disruptions. Water entered homes and shops in low-lying areas. Due to poor drainage, locals had to take emergency actions to protect their belongings.
