England defeated West Indies by 21 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series. The match took place at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, Durham. England posted 188/6 in 20 overs, thanks to a blazing knock by Jos Buttler. When West Indies came out to chase, Liam Dawson (4/20 in 4 overs) wreaked havoc along with Jacob Bethell (2/27 in 2 overs). West Indies could only manage 167/9 in 20 overs and lost the match.
Smith Opens, Buttler Goes Big
With Phil Salt on paternity leave, Jamie Smith opened the innings. He had impressed earlier with a quick fifty in the ODI at the Oval. England chose to bat first, and Smith started strong, hitting three boundaries in Jason Holder’s opening over.
Ben Duckett got out early, caught behind off Romario Shepherd’s slower ball. However, that brought captain Jos Buttler to the crease, and the game turned quickly. After settling in, Buttler and Smith attacked the bowlers. In the fifth over, Buttler reverse-scooped Andre Russell for four, then Smith smashed two sixes in the same over, which cost 22 runs.
Buttler then punished Alzarri Joseph in the sixth over, hitting 6, 6, 4, 6 to end the powerplay with 78/1.
Spin Slows Things Down
Once Gudakesh Motie came on, run-scoring slowed. He bowled four tight overs without conceding a boundary. Shepherd then dismissed Smith, who mistimed a big shot. Soon after, Brook got bowled and Banton was out LBW to Russell.
Still, Buttler held the innings together. He brought up his fifty in the eighth over and then focused on rotating strike. Although England had smashed 11 boundaries in the powerplay, they managed only six more in the rest of the innings — four of them from Buttler.
Eventually, he fell for 95, trapped LBW by Joseph. The crowd groaned as he missed a second T20I hundred by just five runs. Despite that, England had a strong total of 188, largely due to Buttler’s brilliance.
Dawson Strikes Early
West Indies' chase began poorly. Liam Dawson opened the bowling and struck early by stumping Johnson Charles. On debut, Matthew Potts dismissed captain Shai Hope in his second ball.
Evin Lewis showed fight, smashing Bethell for 24 runs in one over. But Bethell had the last laugh, getting him caught on the final ball. From there, Dawson returned to destroy the middle order. He dismissed Rutherford and Chase within three balls, halting West Indies’ momentum.
West Indies Collapse Under Pressure
By the halfway mark, West Indies reached 91/3 and needed 98 more. But Adil Rashid bowled a tight over, raising the required rate above 10. Then Dawson came back and broke the backbone of the chase. He bowled Powell with a skidding delivery and ended with figures of 4/20 in four overs.
Jacob Bethell also played his part with 2/27 in 2 overs. Together, they ensured West Indies never recovered. In the end, they managed only 167/9, falling short by 21 runs.
Dawson Earns Player of the Match
After the match, 35-year-old Dawson admitted feeling nervous during his comeback. However, he walked away with the Player-of-the-Match award for his match-winning spell. England now lead the series 1-0 and look confident under new captain Harry Brook.
Brief Scorecard
Jos Buttler began life back in the ranks of England's T20I side by scoring his highest total on home soil—an expertly calculated 96 off 59 balls that brought reassurance to a new-look batting order. Liam Dawson then marked his return to England duty after more than two years with his best figures in any format, claiming 4 for 20 to derail the West Indies' chase.
West Indies, on the other hand, need to rethink their strategies and improve in every department of the game. Regardless of the format, this is the fourth time they have lost to England in the last 15 days. Romario Shepherd showed his potential in the IPL, and now he needs to replicate that performance here in England. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
