For the first time since 2011, India’s Test team travelled to England without either Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. The two senior players recently announced their retirement from the longest format. As a result, the selectors picked a youthful side, naming Shubman Gill as captain.
Quiet Arrival in London
Unlike past tours, the team received no grand welcome. When the squad landed in London on Saturday, no fans or media were present at the airport. In contrast, Kohli’s arrival in Adelaide last November had created a buzz. At that time, fans swarmed the airport and the practice ground. Moreover, security had to shut training sessions, while fans climbed trees to get a glimpse of him.
This time, the mood was very different. A video posted by journalist Vimal Kumar went viral. In it, he remarked, “I did not get to see that hype. Not a single fan or media personnel was seen.”
Fans React to a New Chapter
Naturally, some fans felt disappointed. They said the aura of Indian Test cricket faded with Kohli and Rohit’s exit. Others feared this could mark the downfall of Indian Test dominance. However, a section of fans remained optimistic. They believed Shubman Gill could bring back the excitement—if he performs with the bat.
Gill Addresses the Pressure
Earlier this week, before departing for London, Gill spoke to the press in Mumbai. The first question he faced was about handling pressure without the experienced duo. Yet, Gill responded with calm and confidence.
He acknowledged their contributions but insisted the team is ready for the challenge. “Pressure is always there in every tour. Definitely, two very experienced players who played for such a long time and won so many times, very difficult to fill their space. But it is not a different kind of pressure, all of us players are used to it,” he said.
A Fresh Start for Indian Cricket
Now, all eyes are on this young Indian squad. The five-match Test series begins on June 20. Although the team lacks veterans, it has plenty of talent. If Gill and his teammates rise to the occasion, this could be the beginning of a promising new era.
