Blaise Metreweli Makes History as First Woman to Lead MI6
Blaise Metreweli becomes the first woman appointed to lead the UK’s foreign intelligence agency, MI6, in its 116-year history.

For the first time in history, the United Kingdom has named a woman to lead its foreign intelligence service, MI6. The UK government confirmed on Monday that Blaise Metreweli CMG will take over as the 18th Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service later this year.

Metreweli Makes History at 47

At 47, Metreweli will become the first woman to lead MI6 in its 116-year history. She joined the agency in 1999 and is currently serving as Director General ‘Q’, where she leads efforts in technology and innovation.

In response to her appointment, she said, "I am proud and honoured to have been asked to lead."

Prime Minister Calls It a Timely Decision

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the appointment as “historic.” He stressed that the UK faces serious threats, from spy ships near British waters to cyber-attacks targeting national infrastructure.

“The United Kingdom is facing threats on an unprecedented scale... Metreweli’s appointment comes at a critical moment for national security,” Starmer said.

MI6 Chief's Role Explained

The head of MI6, also known as ‘C’, manages all intelligence operations and is the only publicly named official in the agency. The Chief reports to the Foreign Secretary.

MI6 works closely with MI5 and GCHQ to gather intelligence overseas. Together, these agencies fight terrorism, counter foreign threats, and defend the UK’s cyber borders.

Metreweli said, “MI6 plays a vital role with MI5 and GCHQ in keeping the British people safe and promoting UK interests overseas.”

Praise from the Outgoing MI6 Chief

Current MI6 Chief Sir Richard Moore, who will be stepping down later this year, praised Metreweli’s leadership and understanding of advanced technologies.

“I am absolutely delighted by this historic appointment of my colleague, Blaise Metreweli, to succeed me as ‘C’. Blaise is a highly accomplished intelligence officer and leader, and one of our foremost thinkers on technology,” Moore said.

A Strong Background in Intelligence

Metreweli began her career in 1999 as a case officer. She held several operational roles across West Asia and Europe. She also worked at a director-level post in MI5. Academically, she holds a degree in Anthropology from Pembroke College, Cambridge.
