India and Canada have decided to fully restore their diplomatic ties. Both countries will appoint new high commissioners to restart official communication.
This decision came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis.
According to the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), both leaders agreed to normalize relations. They also discussed filling vacant diplomatic posts left open since both nations expelled several envoys last year.
The 2024 Diplomatic Dispute
In 2024, tensions between the two countries escalated. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian diplomats of supporting criminal harassment and violence against Canadians.
Trudeau had said, “It is obvious that the government of India made a fundamental error in thinking that they could engage in supporting criminal activity against Canadians here on Canadian soil, whether it be murders or extortion or other violent acts.”
After these allegations, Canada refused to lift diplomatic immunity for certain Indian officials. Then-Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly referred to “a number of violent incidents” when defending the decision.
In response, India withdrew six of its diplomats. It also expelled six Canadian envoys from New Delhi. Since then, top-level talks between the countries had come to a halt.
Modi’s Visit Marks a Fresh Start
Now, Modi’s visit to Canada has paved the way to rebuild the relationship.
After their meeting, PM Modi called the discussions “excellent”. He noted that India and Canada share common values like democracy, freedom, and rule of law.
“PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship,” Modi said. PM Carney also welcomed the renewed engagement. He said it was a “great honour” to host Modi at the G7 Summit.

“It’s a testament to the importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance of the issues that we look to tackle together — from energy security and AI to the fight against transnational repression and terrorism,” Carney said.
This diplomatic breakthrough signals a fresh chapter in India-Canada relations. With new appointments and shared goals, both nations aim to rebuild trust and cooperation.
