PM Modi Arrives in Canada for G7 Summit
PM Modi arrived in Canada for the G7 Summit after a decade, aiming to discuss global issues and rebuild strained India-Canada ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Kananaskis, Canada on Tuesday to take part in the G7 Summit. This is his first visit to Canada in ten years and part of a larger three-nation tour.

He arrived on Monday evening (local time) from Cyprus, following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Key Global Issues on the Agenda

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions at the summit will focus on major international challenges. These include energy security, advancements in technology, and innovation.

“At the Summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues," the Ministry of External Affairs earlier said.

This visit also marks Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in a G7 summit, reflecting India's growing engagement with global powers.

Bilateral Talks Planned on the Sidelines

Besides attending the main sessions, PM Modi will also hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders. These talks come just weeks after Operation Sindoor, a counter-terror action by India that targeted terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This operation followed the deadly April 22 attack in Pahalgam.

Canada Aims to Mend Strained Relations

PM Carney's invitation to Modi signals a fresh attempt to repair India-Canada relations. Ties had hit a low after Canada linked Indian agents to the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a claim India strongly denied.

However, in recent months, security officials from both countries restarted communication. They are now considering appointing new high commissioners, suggesting that both sides are open to dialogue.

Last week, India’s External Affairs Ministry described both nations as “vibrant democracies.” It added that the upcoming meeting between the two prime ministers presents a chance to improve ties.

New Delhi believes the forthcoming meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views and “explore pathways” to reset bilateral ties.
