British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has discussed possible military support for the US in case talks with Iran fail. At the same time, Foreign Secretary David Lammy will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday to push for a peaceful solution.
Meanwhile, Lammy will also meet with officials from France and Germany. Earlier, he spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to Reuters, the meeting with Iran was planned with full coordination from the US.
Trump Offers Final Window for Peace
US President Donald Trump has offered Iran a last chance to reach a deal. He warned that if diplomacy fails, he will join Israel in attacking Iran. So far, Trump has not launched any strikes but gave Iran a two-week window to agree to peace.
UK Plays Key Diplomatic Role
Because the UK still has an embassy in Tehran, it remains a central link between Iran and Western countries. Lammy said, “We are determined that Iran must never have a nuclear weapon… A window now exists within the next two weeks to achieve a diplomatic solution. Now is the time to put a stop to the grave scenes in the Middle East and prevent a regional escalation that would benefit no one.”
At the same time, Starmer has been preparing for military action. According to The Times, the UK is open to letting the US use the British base in Diego Garcia. It may also offer logistics or join direct strikes if necessary.
Starmer Discusses Emergency Plans
In fact, Starmer has already alerted his Cabinet. He held meetings with ministers, military commanders, and intelligence officials to prepare for Iran’s possible retaliation.
Moreover, Financial Times reported that the UK may act even without US help if its assets are threatened. One official said, “If our assets are threatened, then we have a right to self-defence, with or without the Americans. But obviously, in that case, we would want to work with the Americans given their superior power against the Iranian threat.”
