Indian Student Tanya Tyagi Dies in Canada, Cause Under Investigation
Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary, has died under unclear circumstances, prompting an official response from the Indian Consulate.

Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student studying at the University of Calgary, has died in Canada under mysterious circumstances. The Indian Consulate General in Vancouver confirmed her death on Thursday and offered support to her grieving family.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Consulate expressed sorrow: “We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary.” The post added, “The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased.”

Although the Consulate said they are coordinating with local authorities, Canadian officials have not yet released an official cause of death.

Social Media Claims Heart Attack

Meanwhile, an unverified post circulating on X has claimed that Tanya died of a heart attack. The message was tagged to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) of India and said, “Appeal 4 help. Tanya Tyagi, a student from Northeast Delhi residing at 559/11D, Lane No 12, Vijay Park, had gone to Canada for studies. She died on June 17, 2025, due to a heart attack. The student's family has appealed to PM Modi for help in bringing her body back.”

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Canadian side regarding this claim.

Echoes of Previous Incidents: Sudiksha Konkani Still Missing

Tanya’s death has added to growing concerns about the safety of Indian students abroad. Earlier this year, another Indian student, Sudiksha Konanki, went missing while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Sudiksha, a 20-year-old student at the University of Pittsburgh and a permanent US resident, vanished on March 6 from a beach near the Riu Punta Cana Hotel. Spanish media reported her last seen wearing a brown bikini, round earrings, a metal anklet, and several bracelets. Her location remains unknown.

Call for More Safety and Support

The recent string of incidents involving Indian students abroad has raised alarm among families and officials in India. The Indian government has been urged to take stronger steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its students studying in foreign countries.
