England Test Series | 1st Test | Day1: Gill Leads with Ton as Jaiswal, Pant Give India Control
Gill and Jaiswal score centuries as India dominate Day 1 of their first Test in the post-Rohit-Kohli era.

India began its first Test match after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with a commanding performance. The match took place at Headingley, Leeds. Under the leadership of new captain Shubman Gill, India dominated from the start on Day 1. The new batting line-up stepped up with confidence. After England won the toss and chose to bowl first on a sunny day, India ended the day strongly at 359 for 3 in 85 overs. Earlier, many fans and experts had expressed concern about the team’s batting strength. They feared India might struggle without their two most senior players.

Jaiswal and Gill Shine with Centuries

To begin with, Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant knock. He scored 101 off 159 balls, his fifth Test century and his first in England. He looked in complete control, hitting boundaries all over the ground. Eventually, Ben Stokes bowled him soon after he reached his hundred.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill led from the front. He stayed unbeaten on 127 from 175 balls, showing calmness and solid technique. This was his first innings as full-time Test captain. He looked focused and composed. Earlier, he had promised to take responsibility—and he delivered. Just like Virat Kohli, Gill also scored a century in his first match as captain.

Rahul Gives a Steady Start

In addition, KL Rahul made an important contribution. He scored 42 from 78 balls and gave India a solid opening with Jaiswal. Rahul looked in great form. However, he got out trying to drive a ball from Brydon Carse, which Joe Root caught in the slips. Rahul seemed frustrated, but he had already played a key role by handling the new ball.

Pant Keeps the Scoreboard Moving

Later, Rishabh Pant joined Gill after the third wicket. He played in his usual attacking style and remained unbeaten on 65 off 102 balls. He kept the scoreboard ticking and supported his captain well. During his innings, he also completed 3000 Test runs, becoming the second-fastest wicketkeeper-batter to do so after Adam Gilchrist.

Sudharsan Falls Early

On the downside, debutant Sai Sudharsan failed to make an impact. He was out for a duck after facing only four balls. His dismissal came soon after Rahul’s wicket in the first session.
