Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again made a bold and controversial statement by saying that "all of Ukraine is ours" and calling Ukrainians and Russians "one people." This remark, made during a Q&A session at Russia's major investment forum in St. Petersburg, reflects his refusal to accept Ukraine as a sovereign nation.
When asked about his ultimate goal in the conflict, Putin replied that he has "said many times" that Russians and Ukrainians are part of the same nation. He added that "in this sense, all of Ukraine is ours," making clear his view that Ukraine rightfully belongs to Russia. His comments received loud applause from the audience filled with Russian officials and business leaders, but they caused shock and concern in Ukraine.
Putin further issued a historical warning, stating that "where a Russian soldier sets foot, that is ours." This statement was seen as a threat of continued military aggression.
Kremlin’s Aggressive Shift Alarms the West
In recent months, the Kremlin had appeared to soften its tone, especially after US President Donald Trump began calling for peace negotiations. Russia seemed to signal its interest in a settlement to show Washington it was open to talks. However, Putin’s latest comments sharply contrast with that approach.
Even more alarming was Putin’s warning about possible nuclear retaliation. When asked how Russia would respond if Ukraine used a dirty bomb, Putin promised "catastrophic" consequences. He said it would be "a colossal mistake" by what he called "neo-Nazis on the territory of today’s Ukraine." He went on to warn that "it could be their last mistake," and added, "we always respond and respond in kind. Therefore, our response will be very tough."
Putin Revives Nuclear Threats
During Joe Biden’s presidency, Putin frequently made nuclear threats, almost on a weekly basis. But these threats mostly stopped after Trump returned to the Oval Office. Now, with his recent comments, Putin appears to be ignoring diplomatic restraint, suggesting that Moscow no longer cares about Trump’s current position on the conflict.
This shift has led many to believe that the Kremlin may now act more independently, even if it risks damaging potential ties with Washington.
Trump Shifts Focus Amid Iran-Israel Conflict
At the same time, Donald Trump seems to have stepped back from trying to mediate the Russia-Ukraine war, even as tensions continue to rise between Iran and Israel. While Trump seems interested in warming ties with Moscow, neither he nor Ukrainian leaders have publicly responded to Putin's latest remarks.
