US President Donald Trump said that Harvard University acted "extremely appropriately" during recent negotiations with his administration. He also suggested that both sides could reach a deal soon.
His remarks came shortly after a federal judge blocked Trump’s move to stop Harvard from enrolling foreign students. The decision by District Judge Allison Burroughs means that international students can continue attending the university while the lawsuit filed by Harvard moves forward.
Trump Signals Progress in Negotiations
In a post on Truth Social, Trump addressed questions from the public about Harvard.
He wrote, “Many people have been asking what is going on with Harvard University and their largescale improprieties that we have been addressing, looking for a solution. We have been working closely with Harvard, and it is very possible that a Deal will be announced over the next week or so.”
He added, “They have acted extremely appropriately during these negotiations, and appear to be committed to doing what is right. If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be ‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC, and very good for our Country.”
Legal Battle Still Ongoing
Despite Trump’s optimism, sources told CNN that a final deal is not very likely at this point. Negotiations continue between Trump officials and a small group of Harvard leaders.
Meanwhile, the legal battle began in April, when Harvard sued the Trump administration. The university challenged the decision to freeze federal funding and asked the court to make a quick ruling.
The next oral arguments in the case are scheduled for July 21.
Harvard Defends Its Independence
In court documents, Harvard accused the Trump administration of punishing the university for defending its First Amendment rights.
The filings claimed, “Trump’s actions were retribution for Harvard’s exercising its First Amendment rights to reject the government’s demands to control Harvard’s governance, curriculum, and the ‘ideology’ of its faculty and students.”
Trump Targets Top Universities
Trump has repeatedly targeted top universities like Harvard. He criticized them for resisting government oversight. He pushed for control over how they manage their staffing, curriculum, student admissions, and viewpoints on campus.
Harvard, however, has stood firm and refused to accept such conditions, leading to an intense standoff.
