Jaiswal Under Fire After Viral Video Follows India’s Defeat at Headingley
Yashasvi Jaiswal faced heavy criticism after India’s Headingley defeat, as a viral video of him dancing post a dropped catch angered fans.

India's heavy defeat in the first Test at Headingley has left fans disappointed, and Yashasvi Jaiswal is facing most of the criticism. The young opener dropped over six catches across both innings, most of them in the slips. Now, a video showing him smiling and dancing soon after another dropped chance has gone viral and drawn public anger.

Jaiswal’s Fielding Overshadows His Century

Jaiswal scored a century in the first innings, which was one of the few bright spots for India. However, his repeated mistakes in the field became a major talking point. He dropped several key catches, including one that gave Ben Duckett another chance in the second innings. That moment proved costly, as Duckett went on to score a match-winning 149.

What really upset fans was the timing of the viral video. In the clip, Jaiswal is seen grinning and dancing shortly after dropping Duckett again on Day 5, just before the English batter reached his century.

Fans Criticise Jaiswal for Poor Optics

The video caused a stir online. Many fans said it looked inappropriate, especially given how serious the situation was. India had just suffered a painful loss, with England successfully chasing 371 runs—their second-highest chase in Test history.

Duckett led the way with his fluent 149. His partner Zak Crawley gave England a strong start with a well-made 65. Even though England’s middle order stumbled briefly, Joe Root (53)* and debutant Jamie Smith (44)* calmly finished the match. Their unbeaten 71-run partnership sealed the win.

Indian Bowlers Struggled Despite Early Efforts

India’s bowlers couldn’t hold back the English batters. Even Jasprit Bumrah, who had taken five wickets in the first innings, couldn't break the partnership between Duckett and Crawley, who added 188 runs for the first wicket.

Later in the day, Prasidh Krishna took some quick wickets and Shardul Thakur dismissed Duckett and Harry Brook in consecutive deliveries. But by then, England were firmly in control.

Fielding Errors Proved Costly

India’s fielding was a major letdown. The team dropped multiple catches at crucial moments. Jaiswal alone was responsible for three missed chances off Bumrah’s bowling in the first innings. His drop of Duckett in the second innings allowed the batter to reach triple figures and guide England to victory.

As the team and fans dealt with the loss, the video of Jaiswal in a relaxed, cheerful mood added fuel to the fire. Many felt it showed a lack of seriousness and hurt the team’s image after such a tough defeat.

With the loss, India now trail 0-1 in the five-match Test series. The second Test is set to begin on July 2 at Edgbaston.
