Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are currently in Venice preparing for their wedding festivities. However, new reports suggest they may have already exchanged vows in private weeks ago.
Sources Claim Couple Married in the US
According to The Daily Mail, the couple secretly got married more than a month ago. Sources close to the couple said the ceremony happened in the United States, under American law.
In fact, while they planned the Venice celebration, they already considered themselves married. As the report noted, both Bezos and Sanchez had made it clear to insiders that the legal ceremony was already done.
No Italian Marriage License Filed
Moreover, the couple did not apply for a marriage license in Italy, according to The Times of London. As a result, their celebration won’t be legally recognized under Italian law.
City officials confirmed there was no official request from the couple to hold a civil wedding. Therefore, no legal marriage will take place in Venice.
Couple Signed a Major Prenup
Additionally, Page Six reported that both signed a huge prenuptial agreement. Three top divorce attorneys confirmed this prenup aims to protect Bezos’s $244 billion fortune.
They also explained that the agreement will be legally enforceable worldwide, no matter where the marriage took place.
Divorce Jurisdiction Belongs to Florida
Furthermore, a Florida-based attorney stated that Florida is the couple’s primary residence. This means any future divorce would need to be filed in Florida.
As the lawyer clarified, “Likewise, if they left Florida and moved to New York as a primary residence they would have to divorce in NY.”
No Role for City Officials in Venice
In addition, an Italian source told Page Six that no municipal officials will be part of the event. The Culture Commissioner, who works with the Venice Mayor, confirmed this decision.
Under Italian law, weddings must be held in a town hall or an approved venue. However, there is no evidence that such a ceremony took place. Also, the couple did not file any required paperwork for non-residents to marry in Italy.
