World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made a strong start at Wimbledon on Tuesday, easily defeating fellow Italian Luca Nardi in straight sets — 6-4, 6-3, 6-0. Neither the scorching heat nor Nardi’s efforts could slow down Sinner, who looked fully in control from start to finish.
This was Sinner’s first Grand Slam appearance since his intense French Open final loss to Carlos Alcaraz. But this match was far less demanding. Ranked No. 95, Nardi couldn’t match Sinner’s level and struggled throughout the encounter.
A One-Sided Lesson
Although Nardi had previously said he learned a lot from Sinner, this match clearly highlighted the difference in class. Sinner was faster, stronger, and hit harder. His serve and powerful groundstrokes overwhelmed Nardi, who kept up in the first two sets but faded completely in the third.
After the win, Sinner said, “I am very happy to come back here, it’s a special place for me and playing against an Italian is very unfortunate for us but one has to go through so I’m happy that it’s me.” The crowd applauded warmly after his confident performance.
Sinner’s Form and Tools Fit for Grass
So far, all of Sinner’s three Grand Slam titles have come on hard courts — in Australia and the U.S. At Wimbledon, his best result was a semi-final finish.
Still, even against limited resistance, Sinner showed he can thrive on grass. His strong serve and flat forehand suit the quick surface. He didn’t show signs of rust, even though he only played two matches since the French Open and had split from his coach and physiotherapist right before Wimbledon began.
Total Control Despite Heat
Sinner applied relentless pressure from the first point. Nardi managed to save four break points in the opening set but couldn’t hold on. At 5-4, Sinner struck a sharp forehand to set up more break chances. He converted one of them and sealed the set.
Despite the intense heat on Court One, Sinner stayed calm. He used ice towels during breaks and never let the weather affect his focus.
He dominated the second set, breaking early for a 2-0 lead and hardly losing points on serve. Nardi had no answers as his energy faded.
Final Set Blowout
In the third set, Sinner picked up even more speed. He broke Nardi in the first game, and twice more after that. He wrapped up the match with a clean service winner.
Nardi, a motorcycle enthusiast, tried to keep up but couldn’t match Sinner’s intensity. The 21-year-old had no solutions as Sinner raced to the finish line.
Crowd Cheers Despite Past Suspension
Sinner will next face Aleksandar Vukic in the second round. Despite serving a three-month suspension earlier this year for a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), fans welcomed him warmly.
“The atmosphere is amazing actually,” he said after the win. “So thank you for coming out.”
