Putin and Macron Hold Long Phone Call on Ukraine and Middle East
Putin and Macron held a two-hour phone call discussing Ukraine, Iran, and Middle East tensions, with Macron urging a ceasefire and Putin blaming the West for the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke over the phone on Tuesday to discuss key global issues. The Kremlin described the conversation as “substantial” and said the leaders focused on the situations in the Middle East, Iran, and Ukraine.

Macron calls for Ukraine ceasefire

According to Macron’s office in Paris, the phone call lasted for two hours. During the discussion, Macron urged Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine and begin peace negotiations.

Putin blames the West for Ukraine conflict

The Kremlin shared that Putin blamed the war in Ukraine on Western actions. He told Macron the conflict was “a direct consequence of the West’s policy,” claiming the West had “ignored Russia’s security interests” over the years.

Putin also insisted that any future peace deal should reflect “new territorial realities.” This means Russia wants the agreement to recognize the regions it has taken over in Ukraine. Putin has repeatedly said that a peace deal must include Russia’s control over those areas.

Talk on Iran’s nuclear program

The two leaders also discussed Iran’s nuclear program. Putin said it was important to respect Iran’s right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He added that Iran must continue following the rules under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Macron, on the other hand, stressed the need for Iran to meet its commitments. He said Iran must fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

More talks planned

According to the Elysee Palace, both leaders agreed to stay in touch. They plan to coordinate further and speak again soon.
