UK Resumes Ties with Syria After 14 Years, Pledges £94.5 Million Aid
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy renewed diplomatic ties with Syria after 14 years, pledging £94.5 million in aid to support the war-torn country’s recovery.

In a major foreign policy shift, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced that Britain is re-establishing diplomatic relations with Syria. The decision comes more than a decade after ties were severed due to Syria’s prolonged civil war. Lammy stated on Saturday, “There is renewed hope for the Syrian people,” adding, “It is in our interests to support the new government to deliver their commitment to build a stable, more secure and prosperous future for all Syrians.”

Historic Visit to Damascus

Lammy’s announcement followed his official visit to Syria, where he met the country’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa. Notably, this marks the first time in 14 years that a British minister has visited Syria.

UK Pledges Humanitarian Aid

According to The Guardian, Lammy brought with him a strong gesture of goodwill—£94.5 million in humanitarian aid. The UK government said the funds will be used to assist Syria's long-term recovery and support countries that continue to host Syrian refugees.

Shift in Western Policy Toward Syria

This renewed engagement comes at a time when several Western powers are reconsidering their stance on Syria. In December, Islamist insurgents from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham forced out former president Bashar al-Assad, ending the 13-year-long civil war. The leadership transition appears to have opened a new diplomatic chapter for the country.

Just last month, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order lifting American sanctions on Syria. Earlier in April, the UK also relaxed its own restrictions, unfreezing assets belonging to the Syrian central bank and 23 other entities. However, sanctions remain in place against individuals from Assad’s former regime.

Lammy Calls for Stability and Inclusivity

During his visit, Lammy met Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani along with President al-Sharaa. After the meeting, he emphasized the need for inclusive political reforms. “A stable Syria will reduce the risk of irregular migration, ensure chemical weapons are destroyed, and tackle the threat of terrorism,” Lammy said. He also stressed Britain’s commitment to supporting Syria through its transition.

Next Stop: Kuwait

After concluding his Syria visit, Lammy is expected to travel to Kuwait. There, he will hold talks focused on regional security and strengthening UK-Kuwait ties. Additionally, he is set to unveil a new partnership aimed at addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
