Brazil Honours PM Modi with Top Civilian Award for Strengthening Global Ties
Brazil awarded PM Modi its top civilian honour, recognising his leadership and efforts to deepen India-Brazil ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the country’s highest civilian award — the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, on his official visit to Brazil.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva presented the honour personally. He acknowledged PM Modi’s leadership and his contributions to strengthening bilateral ties and global partnerships.

Modi Expresses Gratitude, Dedicates Award to India

Following the award ceremony, PM Modi expressed deep appreciation. He said, “… I want to thank my friend, President Lula, for the warm welcome accorded to us in Rio and Brasilia… The President conferring Brazil’s highest honour on me is not just a matter of pride for me, but for 140 crore Indians…”

Moreover, he praised President Lula’s role in building ties between the two countries. Calling Lula “the chief architect of India-Brazil strategic partnership,” he added, “I dedicate this honour to our friendship and his deep commitment towards India.”

Both Nations Set Bold Trade Target

Furthermore, PM Modi highlighted plans to increase economic cooperation. He announced, “We have decided to take bilateral trade to $20 billion in the next five years.”

To emphasize cultural connections, he used sports as a metaphor. “Football is the soul of Brazil, while cricket is the Indians’ passion,” he said. He continued, “Whether the ball goes beyond the boundary or is in the goal post, a partnership of $20 billion is not difficult…”

PM Modi Joins a Prestigious List of Recipients

Notably, this is the 26th international honour given to PM Modi by a foreign country since 2014.

The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross is reserved for foreign heads of state. Brazil awards it to those who promote peace, friendship, and diplomacy on the global stage.

In fact, some of the past recipients include historic figures like Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. With this, PM Modi joins the ranks of some of the world’s most respected leaders.
