Belinda Bencic Beats Rising Star Mirra Andreeva in Straight Sets to Reach Wimbledon Semifinal
Belinda Bencic defeated Mirra Andreeva in two tiebreaks to enter her first Wimbledon semifinal and become the first Swiss woman to do so since 1998.

Belinda Bencic created history on Wednesday by reaching her first-ever Wimbledon semifinal after a hard-fought win over Russia’s Mirra Andreeva. The Swiss player won in straight sets, 7-6(3), 7-6(2), by holding her nerve in two intense tiebreaks.

The 28-year-old, who is also the only mother left in the singles draw, sealed the win on her first of four match points. This victory made her the first Swiss woman to enter a Wimbledon semifinal since Martina Hingis did it in 1998.

Bencic will now face world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland, who has already won five Grand Slam titles. That match will decide who makes it to the final.

A Close First Set

The match began evenly, with both players showing strong performances. Andreeva, just 18 years old, fired four aces in the first set, while Bencic had none. Both players held their serves without much trouble. However, in the first-set tiebreak, the Russian teen made a few mistakes. She hit two forehands into the net, allowing Bencic to take the set.

Second Set Drama

In the second set, the pressure remained high. Bencic got two break points at 4-4. Andreeva saved the first but then hit a shot long, giving Bencic a 5-4 lead. With that break, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion had the chance to serve for the match.

But Andreeva showed great resilience. She broke Bencic immediately, making it 5-5. The young Russian then held her serve to go up 6-5. With her back against the wall, Bencic stayed calm and held her serve to force another tiebreak.

In the second tiebreak, Bencic kept her focus and finished strong. She finally secured the win and smiled as she celebrated the biggest moment of her Wimbledon career.
