Flight Attendant Shares Perks of Sky-High Career and Life in Dubai
Emirates flight attendant Serena Williams reveals how her journey from beauty therapy to aviation brought global travel, luxury perks, and a fulfilling life in Dubai.

A flight attendant shared glimpses of her career journey. Serena Williams, a 31-year-old Emirates flight attendant, told Business Insider that she began her career in 2013 with easyJet in London, despite originally training as a beauty therapist. After two years at easyJet, she joined British Airways in search of longer layovers and broader international experience. She worked there for five years before moving to the Middle East.

In 2022, Williams relocated from the UK to Dubai after being selected to join Emirates, the largest airline in the Middle East. Interestingly, her background in beauty turned out to be useful at Emirates, where maintaining a polished look, including signature red lipstick, is part of the cabin crew uniform. “My background in beauty has come in handy,” she said.

More Than Just Serving Meals

Williams explained that being a flight attendant involves far more than just offering food and beverages. She pointed out the responsibilities that come with the role. “We're responsible for the security search of the aircraft, the safety equipment checks. There are often medical situations on board, and we have to know what to do,” she said.

Perks of Working with Emirates

Working for Emirates, according to Williams, brings several benefits. When she first moved to Dubai, the airline provided her with accommodation. She now lives independently, supported by a housing allowance from the airline.

One of the biggest financial advantages is a tax-free salary. In addition, she enjoys exclusive perks through an Emirates employee platinum card. The card offers free access to beach clubs, as well as discounts at various restaurants, hotels, and shops. “The card may give me free entry to a nice hotel, or 10% off at a clothing store, or a 25% discount on a certain bill,” she shared.

Life in Dubai and Global Connections

Williams said she has grown fond of her new home. “There are always things to do and places to explore, and there's a big expat community. It's the perfect base for me,” she explained.

Despite living abroad, Williams stays connected with her family. She often bids for UK routes to visit her mother and travels to Sweden in the summer to see her brother. Occasionally, she takes longer routes like Sydney to meet up with friends and cousins in Australia. Emirates crew can request or swap flight routes, which gives Williams the flexibility to maintain her personal relationships while continuing to travel the world.
