Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly escaped an Israeli assassination attempt during a deadly strike on June 15, according to Iran's Fars News Agency, which is linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This attack happened as the war between Iran and Israel escalated.
As per the report, Israel launched a strike on a high-level meeting held by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in Tehran. The main targets were President Pezeshkian, the Speaker of Parliament, and the head of the judiciary. The attackers reportedly used missiles or bombs to block the building’s exits and trap the officials inside.
All three leaders, including Pezeshkian, managed to escape through an emergency exit. However, Pezeshkian reportedly sustained a minor leg injury. Officials said the escape was chaotic and injuries occurred as they fled from the building’s lower floors.
Spy Leak Suspected in Security Breach
Authorities in Iran have launched an investigation into the attack. They suspect that someone may have leaked details of the confidential meeting to Israeli intelligence.
Iranian sources said the operation looked similar to Israel’s alleged assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last year, which raised concerns about repeated tactics.
Pezeshkian Confirms Assassination Attempt
President Pezeshkian later confirmed the attempt in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson. When asked about the strike, he replied, “They did try, yes. They acted accordingly, but they failed.” Pezeshkian didn’t mention the exact date but said it occurred during a meeting. He also confirmed that Israel had used intelligence passed on by spies to locate the target.
Israel’s Broader Campaign Against Iran
The attack on Pezeshkian was reportedly part of a larger Israeli military campaign launched in June. This campaign aimed to destroy Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure and prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
During this offensive, Israel killed several top Iranian military officers and nuclear scientists. Many of Iran’s air defence systems and nuclear sites were also badly damaged or destroyed.
The conflict started on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched surprise attacks on multiple Iranian facilities. These strikes took place while Israel was still engaged in conflict with Hamas in Gaza, which added to the region’s growing instability.
Iran Responds with Missile and Drone Attacks
In response, Iran launched large-scale counterattacks. It fired over 550 ballistic missiles and more than 1,000 explosive drones toward Israeli cities and military positions. The attacks continued for days, as both countries remained locked in fierce combat.
US Joins the Conflict and Stops Khamenei Assassination Plan
On June 22, the United States joined the offensive. US forces targeted Iranian nuclear sites in Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan using Tomahawk missiles and powerful “bunker-busting” bombs. These strikes aimed to weaken Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Reports later suggested that Israel also had plans to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, former US President Donald Trump said he stopped the plan. According to Trump, he blocked both American and Israeli forces from going through with the assassination.
