A 57-year-old man from Palakkad district in Kerala, who died on July 12, is suspected to have been infected with the Nipah virus. This has prompted the state government to tighten contact tracing and field surveillance in the area.
Patient's Condition and Confirmation
The man had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Palakkad before his death. His samples were tested at Manjeri Medical College, which returned a positive result for Nipah virus, Health Minister Veena George confirmed in a statement. However, officials await final confirmation from the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
Earlier Cases in Kerala
Recently, a person from Malappuram also died due to Nipah infection. Meanwhile, another patient from Palakkad district remains hospitalised. The new suspected case has raised concerns of a potential outbreak.
Government Steps Up Response
In response, the health department has launched extensive contact tracing and monitoring efforts. Officials have identified 46 people who came into contact with the deceased. CCTV footage and mobile tower data helped authorities compile the contact list. A detailed route map showing the patient’s recent movements and a family tree identifying close contacts have also been prepared.
“Field teams have been strengthened, and all available data is being used to monitor the situation,” Health Minister Veena George said. The total number of people under surveillance due to Nipah risk has now reached 543.
Surveillance and Public Restrictions
Health teams are conducting fever surveillance across the region to detect symptoms early. Additionally, officials have instructed people in Palakkad and Malappuram districts to avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Visiting friends or relatives receiving treatment is discouraged unless essential. Authorities have allowed only one person to accompany patients as bystanders.
Hospitals now require healthcare workers, patients, and their attendants to wear masks at all times.
About Nipah Virus
According to the World Health Organization, Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection that spreads from animals to humans, often through contaminated food or direct human-to-human contact. The infection is known for its high fatality rate and severe health complications.
State on Alert
The government has intensified surveillance and response measures while awaiting test confirmation. Officials continue monitoring the situation closely to prevent further spread.
