A deadly stampede occurred on Sunday morning at the famous Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. According to officials, six people lost their lives while many others were injured during the chaos.
The tragedy unfolded as a large crowd of devotees had gathered to visit the temple. Officials said that panic likely started due to a rumour of an electric shock on the stairs along the temple route.
“Prima facie, the stampede was triggered by a rumour of an electric shock on stairs 100 metres down the temple route. We are investigating further," said SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal while speaking to ANI. He also confirmed that about 35 injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Huge Crowd Causes Confusion
Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey also confirmed the incident. He said, “Six people have died in a stampede after a huge crowd gathered at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar. I am leaving for the spot. A detailed report of the incident is awaited.” The stampede reportedly began when a massive rush of devotees led to overcrowding, and panic followed the rumour. As the situation worsened, police and administrative teams rushed to the site to bring the situation under control.Government Responds Swiftly
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep grief over the loss of lives. He said that all possible efforts are being made by the administration and rescue teams. “A very tragic incident of a stampede has been reported on the route to the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar. @uksdrf, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am in constant touch with the local administration regarding this and the situation is being closely monitored. Prime Minister Shares Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness over the incident. Through the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), he conveyed his sympathy to the affected families. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede on the route to Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
