A tragic stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, Goa, claimed at least six lives and injured more than 15 people on Saturday morning. ANI reported the incident, quoting North Goa Superintendent of Police Akshat Kaushal.

Huge Crowd Gathers for Annual Ritual

Thousands of devotees had gathered at the Sree Lairai Devi temple for the annual Shirgao Jatra. People from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka arrived to attend the famous event, according to PTI.

Cause of Stampede Still Unknown

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact reason behind the stampede. However, a senior police official said, “The exact cause of the incident would be determined following an investigation.”

Festival with Deep-Rooted Traditions

The Lairai Devi temple, known for its unique architecture combining northern and southern Indian styles, holds this grand festival every May. The Shirgao Jatra features an intense fire-walking ritual that draws thousands of worshippers each year.

Devotees Perform Rituals All Night

Throughout the day, villagers from nearby areas like Maulingem offer prayers and participate in rituals dedicated to Goddess Lairai. As midnight approaches, the devotees gather inside the temple and take part in a rhythmic circular dance. They clash sticks in sync with drum beats, adding to the spiritual atmosphere.

Fire-Walking Marks the Highlight

Later, a designated person lights a massive bonfire outside the temple. This dramatic moment signals the beginning of the fire-walking ritual. After the flames subside in the early morning, worshippers walk barefoot across the glowing embers while chanting the goddess’s name.

Many of them repeat the walk multiple times as an act of devotion. Finally, they place their garlands on a sacred banyan tree and head back home. The festival officially ends at sunrise.
