Winona Ryder will reprise her role as Joyce Byers in the final season of Stranger Things. The first part of Season 5 will release on November 26, 2025. As fans eagerly await the finale, Ryder has revealed a turning point from her early career—one that shaped her path in Hollywood.
She Was Dropped From a Marlon Brando Film
Recently, in an interview with Elle UK, Ryder shared that she was once cast in the 1990 film The Freshman, starring Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick. However, things took a sudden turn after producers watched her in Heathers.
Heathers Triggered the Backlash
In 1989, Ryder starred in Heathers as Veronica Sawyer, a high schooler who teams up with her boyfriend JD, played by Christian Slater, to take down the school’s queen bee. What starts as a prank turns deadly when Heather Chandler dies, and the duo fakes it as a suicide.
As a result, the film dealt with difficult themes like teen suicide, gun violence, social pressures, and more. However, it wrapped these dark subjects in satire and sharp comedy.
Why the Producers Changed Their Minds
Because of her role in Heathers, Ryder faced criticism. “I was told I was never gonna work again if I did Heathers,” she recalled. “I did lose a job.”
According to her, the producers of The Freshman were offended. “They thought it was making fun of teen suicide. They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer.”
Naturally, Ryder felt disappointed. “I’m like, ‘I can’t work with Marlon Brando?’” she said. Even so, she remained firm in her beliefs. “But I had to stand my ground. I wasn’t gonna apologise.”
To this day, she still cherishes Heathers. “I never turn off Heathers if it’s on. I know it basically by heart,” she admitted.
Director Defended the Film’s Purpose
Earlier, Heathers director Michael Lehman spoke with The Denver Post about the backlash. He explained that the film used dark comedy to reflect real human behavior. “The more horrifying or disturbing human behavior is, the more opportunity there is to mine it for certain types of comedy,” he said.
Moreover, he clarified that people misunderstood the movie’s intent. “When it came out, a lot of people were very upset,” he said. “They said, ‘How dare you make fun of teenage suicide!’ But Columbine hadn’t happened yet. And anyway, we weren’t making fun of teenage suicide—we were making a comedy about how adults perceive teenagers and how teenagers treat each other.”
Her Career Moved Forward Anyway
Despite losing the role in The Freshman, Ryder’s career didn’t slow down. In 1990, she starred in both Edward Scissorhands and Mermaids. Over the next few years, she earned two Oscar nominations—for The Age of Innocence in 1993 and Little Women in 1994.
In addition, she went on to win a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and even a Grammy Award.
She’s Now a Key Part of Stranger Things
Now, Ryder returns once more in Stranger Things 5, a show she has been part of since 2016. As Joyce Byers, she has helped anchor the series with emotional depth and resilience.
Ultimately, her story shows that even bold, controversial choices can lead to lasting success—especially when you stand by your values.
