Ioan Gruffudd Reflects on the Unmade Third Fantastic Four Film
Ioan Gruffudd shares how the cancellation of the third Fantastic Four film impacted him deeply, despite the franchise’s continued fan love and new reboot.
Ioan Gruffudd, who portrayed Reed Richards in the original Fantastic Four movies, has addressed the long-standing confusion over why a third installment in the series never happened. After the success of the 2005 film and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007, plans for a third film seemed certain. Gruffudd confirmed that the entire cast—including Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis—was set to return. However, he believes 20th Century Fox ultimately dropped the script, leading to disappointment among both fans and the actors.

Momentum Lost Despite Sequel's Success

Speaking to Vulture, Gruffudd said, "The mindset was that we were going to do three, and I think the second movie was equally successful as the first and equally enjoyable for the fans." He especially enjoyed working with Doug Jones, who played the Silver Surfer, praising him as a master of physical performance. Gruffudd added, "There was definitely that sort of momentum, and the plan was to do three movies, but these decisions are beyond my control."

Personal Impact and Therapy

The cancellation deeply affected Gruffudd. He revealed that he began therapy after the project was shelved, as he struggled with the emotional impact of losing a role that had become an integral part of his life. "Actors often feel lost when they stop playing a character," he noted. For Gruffudd, Mr. Fantastic was more than a role; it was a part of his identity across two major films.

Pride in the Franchise

Today, Gruffudd looks back with pride. He said, "I’m incredibly proud to be part of such a beautiful franchise because it has touched my life in a very profound way." He expressed gratitude for the passionate fans who continue to cherish the films, adding, "I feel a great sense of pride that I got to represent a character that is so beloved, in a franchise that’s so beloved, and in comics that are so beloved."

New Chapter Begins

Recently, Gruffudd attended the Los Angeles premiere of The Fantastic Four: First Steps with his pregnant wife, Bianca Wallace. The reboot introduces a new cast, with Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing.
