Ukraine Cracks Down on Defence Corruption After Public Outcry
Ukraine has arrested politicians and officials over a large defence corruption scheme, just days after restoring the independence of its anti-graft agencies.

Ukrainian authorities have arrested several politicians and officials for their alleged involvement in a major corruption scandal in the defence sector. The announcement came just days after the country saw public anger and protests over changes to its anti-corruption agencies.

Agencies Regain Independence After Public Outcry

At the end of July, the Ukrainian government passed a controversial law that placed two key anti-corruption bodies—the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP)—under the control of the Prosecutor General. The Prosecutor General is appointed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, the move triggered backlash both at home and abroad. Ukraine’s allies, who have supported the country during its war with Russia, raised strong concerns. This pressure, along with street protests—the first since Russia’s 2022 invasion—forced Zelenskyy to reverse course. On Thursday, he restored full independence to NABU and SAP.

Defence Sector Scam Involved Inflated Prices and Kickbacks

Soon after the independence of the agencies was reinstated, NABU and SAP revealed a massive corruption network in the defence sector. According to a statement on Saturday, officials uncovered a scheme in which budget funds meant for the military were misused.

The scam allegedly involved overpricing electronic warfare and drone equipment. Around 30 percent of the contract value was siphoned off, NABU reported.

Among the suspects are a sitting member of parliament, local government heads, National Guard officers, and defence company executives. NABU confirmed four arrests so far but did not disclose their names.

The interior ministry also said it had suspended the implicated National Guard members.

Zelenskyy Thanks Agencies, Admits Importance of Independence

President Zelenskyy praised the work of the investigators. In a public statement, he said, “I am grateful to the anti-corruption agencies for their work.” He added, “It is important that anti-corruption institutions operate independently, and the law passed on Thursday guarantees them all the tools necessary for a real fight against corruption.”

Zelenskyy had earlier defended his decision to bring the agencies under control. He argued they were ineffective and possibly under “Russian influence.” But as protests grew and political pressure mounted, he reversed his stance. This became one of the most serious challenges to his leadership since taking office six years ago.

Corruption in the Defence Sector Remains a Serious Concern

Ukraine has struggled with corruption for years. Even during the ongoing war with Russia, several scandals have emerged involving the defence ministry and military officials. These issues have alarmed both citizens and international supporters who want Ukraine to maintain strong governance during the conflict.
