Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Warns of Missile and Nuclear Strikes Over Indus Dam
Pakistan’s Army Chief warns of possible missile and nuclear retaliation if India proceeds with Indus River dam construction, raising regional tensions.

In a rare and blunt message delivered on US soil, Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir warned that Pakistan could launch missile strikes and even escalate to nuclear conflict if India continues building dams on the Indus River. Speaking at a formal dinner in Tampa, Munir said, “This river is not the Indians’ family property.” He added, “We have no shortage of missiles, al-Hamdulillah [praise be to God].”

Nuclear Threat Raises Regional Security Concerns

General Munir made a strong statement about Pakistan’s nuclear capability: “We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us.” This is the first time a senior Pakistani military leader has publicly made such a threat against India while abroad, especially in the United States. The remarks have heightened worries about the fragile security situation in South Asia.

Water Disputes Could Trigger Larger Conflict

Dam construction on the Indus River has long caused tensions between India and Pakistan. Munir’s clear link between water disputes and potential missile and nuclear strikes shows how fights over resources could lead to broader geopolitical problems.

General Munir’s Official Visit to the United States

General Munir is on his second visit to Washington since the recent four-day conflict with India, according to the Pakistan Army. The army confirmed that during his trip, he met senior US political and military leaders, as well as members of the Pakistani community.

Participation in Key US Military Ceremonies

While in Tampa, Munir attended the retirement ceremony of US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander General Michael E. Kurilla. He also took part in the Change of Command ceremony where Admiral Brad Cooper became the new CENTCOM commander.

Meeting with US Military Leadership

Munir met with General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to discuss mutual professional interests. During the meeting, he invited General Caine to visit Pakistan.
