A US delegation planned to visit New Delhi from August 25 to 29 for the sixth round of trade talks. However, an official told PTI, “This visit is likely to be rescheduled.” So far, both nations have completed five rounds.
Tariffs Spark Tension
Recently, US President Donald Trump announced fresh tariffs on India. He imposed an additional 25 per cent duty on New Delhi’s Russian oil imports. As a result, India now faces a total tariff burden of 50 per cent.
Disagreements Over Key Sectors
Meanwhile, the US continues to demand greater market access in dairy and agriculture. India has pushed back firmly. It insists that such terms would harm the livelihood of farmers and cattle rearers.
Both Sides Eye Long-Term Gains
Despite tensions, both countries remain committed to progress. They want to complete the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement by fall. Furthermore, they aim to expand trade from USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030.
