Ajit Agarkar-Led Panel to Decide Asia Cup Squad, Spotlight on Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Teen prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi is being backed by Kris Srikkanth for a surprise Asia Cup call-up as selectors meet in Mumbai to finalize India’s squad.

The All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19, to finalize the Indian team for the upcoming Asia Cup. The selectors face several tough decisions as they look to balance experience with young talent.

Push for Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Inclusion

Ahead of the meeting, Ajit Agarkar has reportedly been advised to consider teen prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi for the squad. Former chief selector Kris Srikkanth strongly believes the youngster deserves a call-up to the senior team.

Teen Sensation’s Stunning Rise

Suryavanshi has become the talk of Indian cricket since his IPL 2025 debut for Rajasthan Royals. The 14-year-old left-hander grabbed headlines after smashing the fastest century by an Indian in IPL history, reaching his hundred in just 35 balls against Gujarat Titans.

He carried this form into the U19 ODI series against England, where he scored 355 runs in five matches, including a brilliant 143 in the fourth game. Suryavanshi is also part of the squad for the upcoming U19 series against Australia.

Srikkanth Urges Bold Move

Kris Srikkanth has urged the selectors not to delay Suryavanshi’s promotion to international cricket.
“You have to play boldly. Don’t make him wait. Don’t say things like let him mature. He is already playing with remarkable maturity. His shot-making has been on another level. If I were chairman, I would definitely have him in the 16," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

Samson’s Place Under Doubt

While Sanju Samson had an impressive run last year with three T20I centuries, Srikkanth feels the wicketkeeper-batter is not a guaranteed starter for the Asia Cup squad. He instead sees young openers like Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Sai Sudharsan as strong contenders.

“Samson is doubtful, according to me. My first-choice opener is Abhishek Sharma, no doubt. I will have two more openers. My picks would be Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudharsan, with Shubman Gill as an option. If I were a selector, I would keep Vaibhav in the 15 for the T20 World Cup,” Srikkanth explained.

Preference for Young Openers

Srikkanth further added that the team’s opening lineup should feature new faces. “He has been outstanding. I think it should be Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan. I would take two out of these three. That would be my preference,” he said.

Samson’s Struggles Against Pace

Earlier this year, Samson had a difficult series against England. He was repeatedly troubled by short-pitched deliveries, with Jofra Archer dismissing him multiple times by targeting the shoulder-high zone.
