Pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray share a strong friendship, but they confessed that their advice on music singles often goes wrong. In a recent chat with Interview Magazine, the two revealed that they almost discouraged each other from releasing some of their biggest hits.
Wrong Calls on Hit Singles
Olivia Rodrigo, 22, recalled doubting Gray’s song Memories, which later became the most successful track on his Superache album. “On Superache, you played me ‘Memories’, which turned out to be the biggest hit on the album. Everyone loved it. And I remember hearing it for the first time and being like, ‘I just think you have better songs’," Rodrigo admitted.
In return, Conan Gray, 26, was unsure about Rodrigo’s single Vampire from her Guts album. She shared, “When I played you Guts, I played you ‘Vampire’, and I was like, ‘Isn’t this good?’ And he’s like, ‘Not for a first single.’” Despite his doubts, Vampire went on to become a major success.
Rodrigo laughed about their track record, saying, “We notoriously give each other bad advice sometimes about samples… We’re notoriously wrong about each other’s songs." He added, "We’re just too close to it and can’t see the forest for the trees."
A Family of Fans
While their judgment faltered at times, Gray revealed that Rodrigo’s family always supported his music. Rodrigo shared that her mom was a big fan of his song Vodka Cranberry. “My mom’s such a huge Conan fan. My whole family, actually. They travel miles to see you in concert," she said.
Friendship That Grew from a Misunderstanding
The bond between Rodrigo and Gray started five years ago in an unusual way. Gray once ghosted Rodrigo after she invited him for a “COVID walk,” thinking she was another Olivia from his hometown in Texas. Thankfully, producer Dan Nigro cleared the confusion by inviting both for dinner. Since then, their friendship has only grown stronger.
They often support each other by performing together, posting TikTok videos, and attending big events like the Met Gala side by side.
