Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was hospitalised this morning after she was attacked during a public hearing at her residence. The incident took place when a man, posing as a complainant, approached her at the weekly Jansunwai meeting.
Attacker Caught on Spot
The man, believed to be in his 40s, suddenly attacked the Chief Minister while speaking to her. Security personnel immediately overpowered him and handed him over to police. Preliminary reports have identified him as Rajesh Sakaria, a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat. He is now being questioned.
Following the attack, senior Delhi Police officers rushed to the Chief Minister’s residence and tightened security in the area.
Political Leaders Condemn Incident
BJP leader Harish Khurana confirmed the attack and said, "One person present at the meeting attacked the Chief Minister. Right now, doctors are examining the Chief Minister. We condemn the attack. It should be investigated if this attack was politically motivated."
Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also alleged that the attack could be linked to political rivalry. He said opponents were unable to tolerate Rekha Gupta’s popularity and ground-level work.
Opposition Reacts
Former Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi strongly condemned the assault. She said, "The attack on Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democracy, there is a place for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence. Hoping that the Delhi Police will take the strictest action against the culprits. It is hoped that the Chief Minister is completely safe."
Probe into Security Lapse
Eyewitnesses said the attacker carried papers in his hand to pose as a petitioner before he struck. The Delhi Police has now launched an inquiry into how such a major security breach occurred. Commissioner SBK Singh will personally oversee the investigation.
