India, China Agree on New Mechanisms to Maintain Border Peace
India and China will form two new groups to ease border tensions as PM Modi prepares to visit China for the SCO Summit later this month.

India and China have agreed to set up two new groups to handle long-standing border tensions. The decision came after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his recent visit to New Delhi.

Purpose of the Groups

One group will focus on “exploring early harvest in boundary delimitation.” The second will handle “maintaining peace and tranquillity” in sensitive border areas. These groups will work under the existing framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).

An Expert Group will look for possible early agreements on boundary issues, while a new Working Group will concentrate on better border management and keeping stability along the frontier.

Modi and Wang Yi’s Meetings

Wang Yi also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders highlighted the “steady progress” in improving bilateral ties. PM Modi stressed that peace along the border is vital for overall relations between India and China.

The two countries also agreed to hold deeper discussions to resolve the border issue. They underlined the need for a long-term political approach to build a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable framework, in line with the 2005 agreement.

After meeting, PM Modi posted on his social media account X (formerly Twitter), "Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other's interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity."

Expanding Dialogue Mechanisms

Apart from the new groups, both sides will establish additional general-level mechanisms in the eastern and middle border sectors, along with the western sector. They also agreed to keep using existing communication channels and prepare for the next round of talks.

Modi’s Upcoming Visit to China

NSA Ajit Doval confirmed that Prime Minister Modi will travel to China later this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. The summit will take place in Tianjin on August 31.

This will be PM Modi’s first visit to China since 2018. Doval said, “Our prime minister will be visiting for the SCO summit,” and described the visit as bringing “new energy” into diplomatic ties.
