Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday praised Operation Sindoor, India’s military action against terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He said the operation sent a strong signal that India “will not sit quietly if terror is unleashed on us.”
Tharoor credits India’s action for ceasefire
Tharoor backed India’s position on the ceasefire with Pakistan in May, which followed days of military tension. He stressed that it was India’s decisive military strikes, not foreign intervention, that pushed Pakistan to seek peace.
Speaking at the launch of the book ‘Whither India-Pakistan Relations Today? Can They Ever Be Good Neighbours?’, Tharoor recalled, “The successful strikes on the night of 9-10 May and the ability of India to intercept the attempted Pakistani response, when they sent missiles to Delhi on the morning of 10th May, is what contributed undoubtedly, and not Mr Trump, to the call by the Pakistani DGMO to his Indian counterpart asking for peace.”
India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10 after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) reached out to his Indian counterpart.
Trump’s claims dismissed by India
Despite this, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that his mediation stopped a possible “nuclear war” between India and Pakistan. He has argued that it was his intervention that led to the truce. However, New Delhi has consistently rejected these claims, maintaining that the ceasefire was a bilateral decision.
Congress questions government’s silence
The Congress party has often demanded clarity from the government on Trump’s statements. Recently in Parliament, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the issue again. He challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confront Trump directly.
Rahul said, “If he has the courage, he will say here that Donald Trump is a liar. 50% Indira Gandhi ka courage hai toh ye bol dega,”
He then corrected his words, addressing the Prime Minister with, “bol denge, sorry.”
