Russian President Vladimir Putin used his address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on Monday to recognize the role of India and China in dealing with the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“Russia highly values the efforts of China, India, and other partners in resolving the situation in Ukraine," he said.
Criticism of the West
Putin argued that no country should seek security at another’s expense. He blamed the West for worsening tensions by pushing Ukraine closer to NATO.
“Western attempts to draw Ukraine into NATO are a contributing factor to the Ukrainian crisis," Putin remarked.
Call for a New Security System
The Russian President underlined the growing relevance of the SCO. He stressed that the group’s discussions could pave the way for a new security structure in Eurasia.
“Dialogue within the SCO helps lay the foundation for a new Eurasian security system, replacing outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic models," Putin said.
He added, “The SCO is steadily increasing its influence in addressing international issues."
Focus on Economic Cooperation
Putin also pointed to rising economic engagement among SCO members. He noted that countries in the bloc were increasingly using national currencies for trade.
“The pace of development of cooperation within the SCO is impressive," he said.
Putin Highlights Ties with China
Ahead of the summit, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s close ties with China. In an interview with China’s Xinhua news agency, he said, “I look forward to in-depth discussions with President Xi Jinping on all aspects of our bilateral agenda, including political and security cooperation, as well as economic, cultural and humanitarian ties."
He added, “And, as always, we will exchange views on pressing regional and international issues."
Leaders Share Light Moment
Before the plenary session began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen exchanging smiles and a brief conversation, highlighting the lighter side of the high-profile summit.
