CM Rekha Gupta Says Delhi Fully Prepared for Flood Threat
CM Rekha Gupta said Delhi is on high alert with strong flood defences as Yamuna’s rising levels trigger warnings and possible evacuations.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday assured that the government and all departments linked to flood management are on high alert and fully prepared.

Government’s Preparations

She said, “Round-the-clock monitoring is underway and this year extensive advance measures have already been implemented. The large-scale desilting of the Yamuna and its drains over the past six months has significantly strengthened flood defences. All barrage gates have been opened to ensure smooth flow, preventing any stagnation. The water is flowing out as swiftly as it enters.”

According to Gupta, these steps will help reduce the risk of waterlogging and strengthen Delhi’s ability to handle rising Yamuna levels.

Rising Yamuna Levels

Meanwhile, Delhi’s Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department issued two flood warnings on Monday. Officials said the peak hourly discharge at Haryana’s Hathanikund barrage crossed three lakh cusecs for the first time this season.

At the Old Railway Bridge (ORB), the Yamuna was flowing at 204.87 metres at 12 PM. Forecasts suggest the level could rise to 206.50 metres within the next 36 to 48 hours. Evacuations in floodplain areas usually begin once the water crosses 206 metres.

Authorities Advise Evacuation

Authorities have asked people living along the Yamuna floodplains to shift to safer locations as the water level continues to rise. Evacuation measures are expected to begin soon to prevent risks to residents.
