Bangladesh produced a dominant performance to beat Kazakhstan 5-1 in the 5th–8th place classification match of the Hero Men’s Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar. With this victory, Bangladesh has guaranteed at least a sixth-place finish and kept their hopes alive for direct qualification to the FIH World Cup Qualifiers.
Strong Win Sets Up Decisive Clash
This win sets up a crucial showdown against Japan in the 5th–6th place decider, scheduled for Sunday. Earlier, Japan defeated Chinese Taipei 2-0 to advance. If Bangladesh wins, they will secure direct entry into the World Cup Qualifiers. However, if they lose, they must play a playoff series against Pakistan, who withdrew from the tournament, to earn a spot.
Early Dominance from Bangladesh
Bangladesh took control from the opening minutes and never looked back. Ashraful Islam opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a well-executed penalty corner. He struck again before halftime, doubling the lead through another set-piece conversion.
Just before the break, Roman Sarkar extended the advantage with a clean field goal, giving Bangladesh a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
After the restart, Islam completed his hat-trick with another powerful penalty corner strike, making it 4-0. Moments later, Tayeb Ali added a fifth goal with a brilliant field effort in the 34th minute.
Kazakhstan managed to pull one back when Altynbek Aitkaliyev scored a consolation goal in the 38th minute. However, they failed to mount a serious comeback, and Bangladesh comfortably sealed the win.
Redemption After AHF Cup Memories
This victory also carried a sense of redemption for Bangladesh. Back in April, during the AHF Cup in Jakarta, Bangladesh had already beaten Kazakhstan twice—3-0 and 5-1—on their way to a bronze medal and qualification for this Asia Cup. This latest triumph reaffirmed their superiority over the Central Asian side.
Boost to Campaign and Morale
The commanding win not only boosts Bangladesh’s confidence but also steadies their campaign after a mixed run earlier in the tournament. It places them in a strong position to push for qualification to the FIH World Cup through either the direct route or the playoff, depending on Sunday’s result.
High-Stakes Match Against Japan
Looking ahead, Bangladesh faces a do-or-die match against Japan. A victory will secure their spot in the World Cup Qualifiers without further hurdles. But a loss will force them into a tense playoff series against Pakistan, turning the clash into a battle for survival and a chance to compete on the global stage.
