Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were caught on a hot mic talking about organ transplants and human longevity during a military parade in Beijing. Consequently, the unusual conversation quickly went viral and sparked worldwide attention.
Leaders Walk Together at Parade
On Wednesday, Putin and Xi walked side by side, leading more than two dozen foreign dignitaries, including North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. They gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
As they walked through Tiananmen Square, Putin’s translator was heard saying in Chinese, “Biotechnology is continuously developing … human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become and (you can) even achieve immortality.”
Immediately, Xi responded, “Some predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old.”
Meanwhile, Kim smiled while walking behind them, though it was unclear whether he understood the exchange. However, Putin’s voice was not clearly audible in Russian on the clip.
CCTV Cuts Broadcast
Shortly after the remarks, CCTV cut to a wide shot of the square, and the audio faded. Moments later, the three leaders reappeared on screen, heading toward the viewing platform.
So far, neither the Russian government nor China’s foreign ministry has commented on the conversation.
China Showcases Military Power
During the parade, more than 50,000 spectators gathered to witness China’s military strength. Moreover, the event featured advanced weaponry, including hypersonic missiles and naval drones.
In his address, Xi delivered a stark message, warning that the world faced a choice between “peace or war.”
Putin and Xi Strengthen Relations
Earlier, Putin arrived in China on Sunday for the summit. During this visit, he and Xi signed over 20 agreements covering energy, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure. Furthermore, they announced plans to build a major new gas pipeline, signaling a deepening partnership between the two countries.
