A massive fire erupted on Sunday afternoon at the New Jankalyan Society in Shanti Nagar, Dahisar East in Mumbai. The blaze claimed the life of 75-year-old Shanti Bachole Gosai and left 18 others injured.
According to officials, over 40 residents were trapped on the upper floors when thick smoke engulfed the building. Firefighters managed to rescue everyone safely after an intense evacuation effort.
Fire Contained After Three-Hour Battle
The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) fought the flames for three hours before bringing the situation under control. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Authorities said three to four victims are in critical condition and receiving treatment in intensive care units.
Fire Started in Basement and Spread Quickly
The fire began around 3 PM in the basement of the ground-plus-23-storey building.
Dense smoke rapidly spread through electrical ducts and wiring shafts, reaching higher floors and trapping several residents inside their homes.
Massive Firefighting Response
To tackle the blaze, the MFB deployed:
-
Seven fire engines
-
Three jumbo water tankers and advanced water tankers
-
Hydraulic and aerial ladders
-
Turntable ladder and high-rise firefighting vehicle
-
Quick response units
Firefighters used the high-rise fire vehicle and ladders to evacuate residents stranded on upper floors.
Tragic Death and Rescue Efforts
Station Officer S.K. Mohite from the MFB said firefighters found Shanti Bachole Gosai unconscious on the first floor.
“She likely lost consciousness due to smoke inhalation while trying to descend the staircase. We rushed her to the hospital, but unfortunately, she was declared dead,” Mohite said.
He added, “Additionally, 3–4 residents are in ICU due to smoke inhalation.” One victim is being treated at Shatabdi Hospital, while 17 others are admitted to private hospitals.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
Initial reports suggest that the blaze was likely caused by a short circuit in the building’s meter box. Authorities are conducting a detailed investigation to confirm the exact cause of the fire.
