Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine early Wednesday. In response, Nato fighter jets took to the skies to secure Polish airspace. Warsaw’s Operational Command announced on social media that Polish and allied aircraft were “operating in national airspace” due to what it called an “intensive air attack” from Russia. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Moscow used more than 500 attack and decoy drones along with 24 missiles. Explosions rocked western Ukrainian cities, including Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, and Lutsk. These blasts raised fears because they occurred near Poland’s border.
Drones Reportedly Cross Polish Airspace
According to GB News, Ukraine’s Air Force alerted Polish officials that Iranian-made Shahed drones often called “suicide drones” had crossed into Poland. As a precaution, Poland closed airspace over major airports such as Warsaw Chopin, Warsaw-Modlin, Rzeszow, and Lublin. Authorities cited “unplanned military activity” as the reason for this emergency step.
Warsaw placed both air and ground defense systems on the highest state of readiness. Officials said these actions aimed to “reassure and protect” citizens, especially in eastern regions near Ukraine. Ukraine also warned that Russian drones were heading toward the Polish city of Zamosc. However, Polish authorities have not confirmed this trajectory.
Political Leaders React Strongly
The suspected drone breach triggered swift political reactions. Polish MEP Dominik Tarczynski urged caution. He warned that misinformation was spreading and said there was still no official confirmation.
Some US lawmakers took a harder stance. Republican Congressman Joe Wilson declared that Russia was “directly attacking Nato territory.” He described the incident as an “act of war” and urged Washington to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow.
Wilson also called for sending advanced weapons to Ukraine so it could strike inside Russia. He claimed President Vladimir Putin was deliberately “testing Nato’s resolve” by extending aggression beyond Ukraine.
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin gave a more measured response. He said repeated drone incidents showed Moscow was “testing the alliance’s willingness to defend member states.” He warned that Nato could not ignore these violations while Ukraine faced ongoing devastation.
Poland Tightens Security Ahead of Belarus Border Closure
The escalation comes as Poland prepares to close its border with Belarus. Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the move would align with Russia and Belarus’s Zapad military exercises. Polish officials labeled these drills “very aggressive” and a direct threat to regional stability. As tensions rise, Warsaw announced that Polish forces will remain on high alert. Nato allies are also monitoring the situation closely as events continue to unfold.
