A fiery speech by a Nepali student has gone viral, igniting massive protests across Nepal. The video, recorded during a campus event in March, has now become the rallying cry for Gen-Z demonstrators demanding change.
Old Speech Resurfaces and Inspires
Initially, the speech attracted little attention. However, as anger against the government grew, the video resurfaced online and spread rapidly.
In the clip, the student passionately declares, “Today, I stand here… stand here with a dream of building a new Nepal, with a fire of hope and passion burning within me, but my heart is heavy because this dream seems to be slipping away.”
He then urges young people to rise up, saying, “Nepal, our mother, this country that gave us birth, nurtured us, what did it ask for in return? Just our honesty, our hard work, our contribution. But what are we doing? We are bound by the chains of unemployment, we are trapped in the selfish games of political parties.”
Furthermore, he calls for unity and resistance. “Corruption has woven a web that is extinguishing the light of our futures. Youths, rise, we are the torchbearers of change. If we do not raise our voices, who will? We are the fire that will burn away the darkness, we are the storm that will sweep away injustice, and bring prosperity.”
He concludes with a challenge, “Our ancestors shed their blood to give us this nation, we cannot sell it, we cannot lose it. Now, we must decide, will we drown in the darkness of despair, or rise as the sun of hope?”

Social Media Ban Triggers Outrage
The protests erupted on September 8 after the government announced a ban on major social media platforms, citing tax and cybersecurity concerns.
As a result, demonstrators flooded the streets of Kathmandu and other cities, including Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj. Although the government later lifted the ban, public anger did not subside. Instead, it fueled demands for accountability and transparency. Protesters accused politicians of favoritism, corruption, and neglecting the needs of citizens.
Violence Escalates Across Cities
Soon after, peaceful rallies turned violent. At least 19 people were killed and 500 were injured in clashes between protesters and security forces.
Moreover, demonstrators set fire to homes and offices of several politicians. Some leaders were even chased through the streets.
Consequently, both the Prime Minister and the President resigned. To regain control, authorities imposed curfews in multiple cities, including Kathmandu.
Movement Gains Strength and Symbolism
Meanwhile, a new video emerged showing the same student delivering a speech on the streets. Loud cheers erupted from the crowd as he repeated his call for change.
Over time, the movement has evolved beyond the initial issue of the social media ban. It has now become a powerful campaign for a corruption-free, accountable government.
A Defining Moment for Nepal
Ultimately, Nepal’s youth have sent a clear message: they refuse to remain silent. What began as anger over a temporary ban has transformed into a historic uprising. Now, a new generation is determined to shape the nation’s future and bring lasting reform.
