South Africa defeated England by 14 runs in the rain-affected first T20I of the three-match series in Cardiff. With this win, South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the series. The match was initially reduced to nine overs per side but faced further interruptions, forcing officials to revise England’s target to 69 runs from five overs.
Despite the tricky conditions, South Africa showed composure with both bat and ball to secure a vital win. The game began more than two hours late due to persistent rain and was later halted again with seven balls left in South Africa’s innings.
Markram Leads With Aggressive Start
Skipper Aiden Markram, who recently fetched R14 million (around USD 800,000) at the SA20 auction, top-scored with a quick 28 off just 14 balls. His knock included two fours and two sixes, setting the tone for South Africa’s innings.
Markram shared a solid 32-run stand for the second wicket with Lhuan-dre Pretorius. After his dismissal, Dewald Brevis and Donovan Ferreira took charge, adding 36 runs off 15 balls, pushing the total towards the 100-run mark.
However, heavy rain cut their innings short, leaving England to chase 69 from 30 balls under the DLS method.
England’s Chase Falters Early
England’s task was daunting with a required run rate of nearly 14 runs an over. Their chase got off to a disastrous start as Phil Salt and Harry Brook fell for ducks.
Captain Jos Buttler gave England hope with a fiery 25 off 11 balls, hitting boundaries with ease. But without support from the other end, his efforts were not enough to challenge South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack.
Wood Grabs Opportunity
England made a late call to play Luke Wood instead of Jofra Archer, who was rested due to wet conditions.
Wood struck early, dismissing Ryan Rickelton with his second delivery, caught behind for a golden duck. Though Markram counter-attacked with a series of boundaries, Wood bounced back by removing Pretorius, thanks to a brilliant diving catch by Brook.
He finished with impressive figures of 2 for 22, making a strong case for more game time.
Brevis Shows His Value
After breaking the SA20 auction record, selling for R16.5 million (around USD 944,000), Dewald Brevis showcased his talent with a stunning cameo.
Facing Liam Dawson, Brevis struck a spectacular no-look six and followed it up with another huge hit into the sightscreen. He also punished Adil Rashid, clearing midwicket for his third six of the night.
However, Sam Curran deceived him with a clever slower ball, forcing a mistimed shot to third man. Despite the dismissal, Brevis’s partnership with Ferreira was crucial in setting up South Africa’s total.
Rabada and Jansen Shine on Return
South Africa welcomed back Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, both returning from injuries. Rabada, who missed recent ODIs due to ankle inflammation, struck with his very first delivery, dismissing Salt.
Though Buttler countered with back-to-back boundaries later in the over, Rabada’s early breakthrough gave South Africa the upper hand.
Jansen also made an immediate impact. After being hit for six early on, he dismissed Jacob Bethell and later produced extra bounce to outsmart Harry Brook. In his second over, Jansen mixed his pace well and removed Buttler to seal the game for South Africa.
Injury Concerns for South Africa
South Africa were without Lungi Ngidi, who sustained a hamstring strain during training and has been ruled out of the series. Keshav Maharaj also missed the game after tweaking his groin in the warm-up.
Nandre Burger will replace Ngidi and is expected to join the squad ahead of the second T20I in Manchester on Friday.
